Abstract Since 1981, MTV Networks (MTVN) has developed a reputation for its ability to provide localized content without compromising the MTV culture. However, the company faced challenges in late 2007 with its launch of MTV Arabia in the Middle East, making it one of the biggest launches in channel history. While the market in the Middle East offered MTV with lucrative business opportunities, the networks controversial content could potentially backfire in the conservative environment prevalent in the region. On the other hand, too much localization to suit the tastes of the region could dilute MTV’s global brand. This paper will discuss MTVN’s challenges, strategy and effectiveness in expanding in the Middle East. Introduction With a growing gross domestic product (GDP) of Arabia, suggesting a lucrative market, MTVN joined forces with the largest media group in the UAE, Arabia Media Group, to launch the Arabic version of MTV as MTV Arabia in 2007. MTVN would be set to compete with approximately 370 other 24-hour free satellite channels in the growing market of $3 billion. These guidelines, commonly known as the â€Å"dear colleague letter,† worked under Title IX federal law to require a minimum standard of action that must be taken when allegations are made by or against a student. The most notable characteristic of the guidelines was the lowered the standard of proof necessary for universities to take action against individuals accused of sexual assault. Wharton studied what actually made their common society tick, paying attention to unspoken signals, the histories of relationships, and seemingly coincidental parallels. All of these factors contribute to the strength and validity of the story of Mrs. Slade and Mrs. Ansley. Roman Fever at first strikes the reader as the simple, rather dull story of two middle aged women sitting on a veranda. The inactiveness of the situation appears to be evident in Mrs. Slades comment, Well, I dont see why we shouldnt just stay here, reflecting that she and Mrs. Ansley have nothing else to do but to sit through the afternoon, overlooking Rome (779). Nothing seems to be going on in this opening sequence, yet nothing could be farther from the truth. The two women have been involved in a battle for the past twenty years, whether they were fully aware of it or not. Subtle signs, such as Mrs. Ansleys slight stress on herself with her response, It always will be, to me (779), and Mrs. Slades recollection of a joke she made years ago regarding her friends home being raided for a speakeasy express to the reader the feeling of unrest, distrust, and dislike that exists beneath the genteel surface of the relationship of the two women (780). She thinks of Jenny Slade, the child of a couple that prided themselves on their exceptional social graces own mother as a little boring (781), a description she also considered for Mrs. Ansley when recalling that she had grown bored with Mrs. Ansleys mundane life long ago (780). Barbara Ansley, on the other hand, was everything that Jenny Slade was not. Mrs. Slade wondered how such a beautiful, exuberant young woman came to be, with those two nullities as parents (780). The reader might consider how it seems that the mothers and daughters were mismatched, a concept that is clever foreshadowing by the author, hinting at the scandal and instability lurking underneath the facade of morality and perfection worn by Slades and Ansleys upper class society. By noting the subtitles of human conditions under the stress of strict societal control, Edith Wharton created literature that is true to the society she portrayed. Mrs. Slade and Mrs. Ansley probably would have liked to cause each other bodily harm, yet their society ruled that such behavior would not be tolerated. Therefore, they buried their feelings and expressed them only in subtle movements and off the cuff remarks, bits and pieces of communication that most people would overlook. However, Wharton realized that these fragments composed the only true communication and therefore composed the real story of Mrs. Slade and Mrs. Ansley. Wharton takes the much-admired upper crust of society and exposes them, not in a hurtful world, but an objectively world. Wharton writes: Ive come to the conclusion that I dont in the least know what they are, said Mrs. Ansley. And perhaps we didnt know much more about each other.(780) This one passage serves as a direct commentary on both the bonds of friendship and family life. Whartons language is objective, straightforward. The character speaks these alarming words, not the writer, and the statement carries the tone of fact without any melodrama involved. The two women had been discussing their time as young women in Rome, the night, the moonlightall part of a very romantic setting with two Italian men on their arms. William Shakespeare was born on April 23, 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon. John Shakespeare, William's father, was a Glover and a Whittaker. He was a highly successful and respected man. His father held many public official positions: mayor, town council man, and justice of peace. Shakespeare's father was not able to write. In 1576, John's business went down. He stopped attending meetings and social events. Shakespeare was twelve at this point in time. Shakespeare's mother was Mary Arden. She came from a wealthy family who paid a handsome dowry to marry her off. While living on Henley Street, she bore eight children with the Shakespeare name. Shakespeare went to Stratford Grammar School where he studied classics written in Greek and Latin. His teachers gave him the incentive to read. Their landlord was giving them an unfair lease that would make the troupe go bankrupt. A few years later Lord Chamberlain's Men, a theater troupe, decided to build themselves a playhouse of their own. They were also short on cash so they thought it would be most cost effective to use the previous timbers from The Theater and therefore the same design. They couldn't use it on the land it was on, so they took the materials illegally to make the Globe. At 12:00 at night, on January 20, they shipped the wood over the river to Bank side. Bank side in London was a "...rowdy bohemian suburb...[with] muddy channels..." said. In 1599, Shakespeare bought 12.5% of the shares in the Globe. During the same year the Globe was quickly completed. William Shakespeare is the person usually associated with the Globe but many other people contribute to its history. James Burbage the stockholder and an actor with Lord Chamberlain's Men, a theater company in London. His two sons Cuthbert and Richard, each received 25% of the shares in the Globe from their father and the other 50% was distributed to five other members of the troupe. This company was called Lord Chamberlain's Men after a patron of the acting company.
